Dividend Aristocrats List for 2016

S&P 500® Dividend Aristocrats index measure the performance S&P 500 companies that have increased dividends every year for the last 25 consecutive years. The Index treats each constituent as a distinct investment opportunity without regard to its size by equally weighting each company.

There are 50 dividend aristocrats today, with an average yield of 2.50%. Tomorrow, I would share a list of the 21 dividend aristocrats I would consider for further research if I were just starting out today.

I personally prefer the list of dividend champions however, because it includes more companies than the list of dividend aristocrats.  However, there is wider availability of historical data on the Dividend Aristocrats index. This is the reason why I started using it when I created this site and started investing in dividend growth stocks over eight years ago. The number of components in the index has ranged between 26 in 1989 to 64 in 2001. I used this list as a primary tool for identifying companies with strong brands, which have raised distributions through both good and bad economic conditions. Check this post Historical changes of the S&P Dividend Aristocrats Index for reference.

Either way, the list of Dividend Aristocrats has done better than the S&P 500 over the past decade.
