Please help me understand this.

On a split adjusted basis, EMR was trading at ~30 on 12/31/1998 and ~36 on 12/31/2008. It has consistently paid dividends.

How can the average annual return be negative.

Maybe you did not take into account the 12/12/2006 2 for 1 split?
